The TameTV remote: a directional pad with an OK button, media keys, volume and channel controls.

What you can do

Free:

  • Find and pair your Apple TV, then press a first key to check that it responds
  • Demo TV to try every feature without a TV

With TameTV Pro (eligible new subscribers can try the weekly plan free for 3 days):

  • Directional pad, OK, Back and Home, volume, mute, channels and playback keys
  • Skip back or forward 10 seconds, and open Settings on the Apple TV
  • What’s playing: the title and artwork, then play, pause, skip or seek
  • Power: wake the Apple TV or put it to sleep
  • Simple layout with big buttons
  • Phone keyboard: type searches and sign-ins with your phone keyboard
  • Apps in one tap: open the apps on the Apple TV from your phone
  • Swipe touchpad for one-handed navigation
  • Every TV at home: save several TVs and switch in a tap
  • Siri and Shortcuts (iOS only): turn the TV on or off, mute it or open an app by voice

Some features depend on the Apple TV’s software and the app that is playing.

Set up in three steps

  1. Connect your phone and the Apple TV to the same Wi-Fi network. Guest networks often block the connection.
  2. Open TameTV. It finds the Apple TV on your network by itself.
  3. The Apple TV shows a code on the screen. Type it in the app.

Pairing happens only the first time. Next time, the app reconnects when you open it. If the Apple TV does not appear, choose Add by IP address and type the address from Settings > Network on the Apple TV.

Power and volume

Power wakes the Apple TV or puts it to sleep. If the Apple TV also turns your TV on and off (Settings > Remotes and Devices > Control TVs and Receivers), the TV follows.

The volume keys change the volume of the TV or receiver that the Apple TV controls. Set this up on the Apple TV in Settings > Remotes and Devices > Volume Control.

Good to know

  • TameTV does not cast photos or videos to Apple TV. On an iPhone or iPad, use AirPlay instead.
  • Your phone and the Apple TV must be on the same Wi-Fi network. TameTV does not use infrared, and it cannot control the Apple TV from outside your home.

Questions about Apple TV

Which Apple TV models work?

Apple TV HD and every Apple TV 4K. Older Apple TV models, up to the third generation, are not supported.

Can I control an Apple TV from an Android phone?

Yes. TameTV works the same on Android and on iPhone and iPad, and one app controls the other TVs in your home too.

Can I cast photos or videos to Apple TV?

Not with TameTV. Apple TV takes photos and videos over AirPlay. On an iPhone or iPad, use Screen Mirroring, or AirPlay from the Photos app.

Do I need an Apple Account in the app?

No. You type a code that the Apple TV shows once, and that is all.
